Matera, a Tour of the Sassi

An itinerary to discover the Sassi districts along impressive alleyways and hidden "neighbourhoods"!
A journey through the history of one of the oldest cities in the world! Along the way, you'll be able to decide with your guide which sites interest you most out of a rupestrian church with mediaeval frescoes, a system to collect rainwater, a typical cave house, a tufa cave transformed into a very modern auditorium, a hypogeous oil mill (booking required).

The bread of Matera and the stamp workshop

A tour of a typical bakery with tasting of a few products (bread, flat bread, biscuits from Matera), while listening to the baker’s story. Transfer in the Sassi districts to a traditional shop to discover the history of the wooden bread stamp, used in times gone by to mark the dough before it was baked, and to see a personalised model being made.

A Walk in the Park of the Rupestrian Churches

An easy trip through the Matera Murgia to discover some gems of the rupestrian civilisation and the area’s botanical and fauna heritage. A visit to Jazzo Gattini (an ancient sheepfold), to the rupestrian sanctuary of the "Madonna delle Tre Porte" and to the churches of "San Falcione" and "San Vito alla Murgia". A stop at the panoramic viewpoint of Murgia Timone with a breathtaking view over the Sassi districts.

Murgia Timone: Caves and ravines (self-guided)

Along canyons and ravines, amidst the fragrance of thyme and other herbaceous plants, to admire the city from a different viewpoint and enjoy some breathtaking scenery.

In the footsteps of James Bond

Matera has become one of the most popular film locations for film directors throughout the world. Over 80 films have been shot in the historic city centre, including the latest James Bond, No Time To Die. The tour winds its way along tiny squares and streets used especially for the latest film of the popular secret agent and takes you to see some of the images of the places where they shot the most spectacular scenes.

Tour of the food speciality shops​

An original tour to discover the Sassi of Matera, alternating between gourmet stops to taste some of the local products. A historical and archaeological tour, with a touch of food and wine devoted to products from the local cuisine. Six different specialities for you to discover the origins and characteristics of each one. A gastronomic tour for aficionados of local products: wine, cheese, liqueurs, baked products, crispy peppers and desserts.

Wine tour of Matera

A tour of the Sassi districts along incredible routes to discover the local "neighbourhoods", courtyards surrounded by cave houses. Breathtaking panoramas are the background to a fascinating tale of the history of wine in one of the world's oldest cities. A visit to an old cave wine cellar, where you can admire the millstones to press the grapes and the tools for the wine-making process. The tour ends with a tasting of a selection of three wines from Basilicata.

Cookery lessons and a visit to the market in Matera​

Cookery lesson to learn to cook traditional dishes using seasonal products. The activity begins with a visit to the market, where you'll be able to choose fresh ingredients for your lunch. You will then transfer to the restaurant, where you'll be given a cookery lesson. Homemade pasta, Bolognese sauce, lamb with potatoes are just a few of the recipes to learn.

The cheese workshop on the farm

Just 10 km outside Matera is a livestock farm where you can visit the cattle and the other farm animals. We'll move on to the tiny workshop to prepare the ricotta using age-old techniques. This will end with a tasting of the cheeses with honey and jam. Return to the city.

Trekking in the mountain range of Basilicata, the Dolomiti Lucane

A day in the Dolomiti Lucane. The green heart of Basilicata, where wood-covered mountains rise over the valley of the River Basento. The villages look like jewels against the sandstone, shaped by the wind and by erosion. Along the paths running over the peaks you'll come across some awesome views. The ancient villages will appear at the end of your trip. Stories of Templar and Arabian Knights and bandits will liven up the tale of the trip. In the summer months, you can experience the stunning, unforgettable Flight of the Angel (prior booking essential)!

Trips to the Pollino National Park

Mount Pollino rises between Calabria and Basilicata and is home to Italy's largest National Park with its unpolluted nature, where you can get up close to the imposing pine trees known as Pini Loricati (Pinus heldreichii). Hot-air balloon ride

A unique experience that you'll never forget. In the dawn silence, we'll float upwards on board a hot-air balloon to admire the breathtaking beauty of the Sassi of Matera or Craco, the «ghost town» from above. The gentle currents will accompany our flight and give us some unforgettable views of rivers, valleys, castles and ancient towns, as the sun rises in the sky.
